Chapter 17

Lewis blinked in surprise at the voice and started scanning the cave walls for any sign of the source. His eyes stopped on a speaker box near the entrance, obscured mainly by Lucy. Frowning, he carefully shuffled past his friends, wary not to step on any of the humans, before carefully shoving Lucy out of the cave. She glowered at him before willingly taking a few steps back.

“Dragon,” the speaker box crackled again, “you need to get to Wales?”

A large red button was positioned below the speaker box, and Lewis held it down with a single claw. “Martha, have you been listening to us this entire time?”

There was a moment’s pause before her response came through. “There’s a new dragon in town. Of course, I’m going to keep an eye on you two.”

Lewis’s face turned bright green, and he looked down at the Crone in embarrassment. The old woman was eyeing the speaker box worriedly, as though all her hope rested on the disembodied voice within. For all Lewis knew, it probably did.

“Martha,” Lewis said, holding down the red button, “how much have you overheard? Do we need to get you up to speed?”

There was a pause so long that Lewis was worried Martha had left when suddenly the voice crackled again. “I got the whole thing,” she said, her voice quiet, “I heard everything. Is it true? All of it? People turning into dragons?”

Lewis sighed. He really hadn’t wanted things to come out this way, but he supposed it was now or never. “Yeah, it’s all true. You know how you never found the body of Lewis Cooper?”

“Don’t tell me…” Martha’s voice crackled from over the speaker. “You’re him?”

Lewis didn’t have the heart to answer. Martha took his silence as answer enough.

“God almighty,” Martha breathed. “What about Rosethorn is she—?”

“Lucy Mason,” Lewis confirmed.

There was a moment of silence from the speaker, and Lewis waited to hear if Martha would speak again. “This is so hard to believe, but at the same time, things have been really weird for the last month.”

“Ghosts, dragons, dragon slayers, evil psychopath witches hellbent on destroying all dragon kind,” Lewis said, before glancing down at the Crone. “No offense, Granny,” he quickly added.

The Crone narrowed her eyes but said nothing.

“Martha, do I… Do I need to convince you that we need to do this?” Lewis asked, after a moment’s pause from her end. “Time’s really not on our side here…”

“This dragon apocalypse thing?” Martha’s voice crackled over the speakerphone. “How much time do we really have? Assuming you’re right and I believe you.”

Lewis chewed his tongue and glanced down at the Crone. The old woman shook her head and shrugged.

“Not enough,” Lewis admitted. “We need to get there, like tomorrow.”

More silence from Martha’s end. The cave had gone utterly quiet as everyone held their breath and waited.

“We need a way to transport two dragons and a few people to Wales. Can you help us?” Lewis asked, after a few minutes of silence.

Finally, after another couple of minutes without answers from Martha, the speaker box crackled to life again.
